Operating System


An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's  memory and process, as well as of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communities with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language. Without operating system, a computer is useless.


Types of Operating System.
As computer have progressed and developed , So have their operating systems. Below is a basic list of the categories of operating system will fall into more than one of the below types.
. GUI-Short for graphic User Interface, a GUI operating system contains graphic and icon and is commonly navigated by using a computer mouse. Examples of GUI operating system are: System 7.x, Windows 98, Windows CE
. Multi-user-A multi-user operating system allows for multiple users the same computer at the same time and different times. Example of operating system that would fall into this category are: Linux, Unix, Windows2000.
. Multiprocessing-As operating system capable of supporting and utilizing more than one computers processor. Examples of operating system that would fall into this category are; Linux, Unix, Windows XP.
.Multitasking- An operating system that is capable of allowing multiple software processes to run at the same time. Examples of operating system that would fall into this category are: Linux, Unix, Windows XP
User interface
Visual part of computer application or operating system through which a users interacts which a computer or a software. IT determine how commands are gives to the computer or the program and how information is displayed in the screen. Three main types of user interfaces are
(1)n Commands language ; the user must knows the machine and program-specific instr;
uctions or codes.
(2) Menus: user interface (GUI): user gives commands by selecting and clicking on icons displayed on screen
(3) Graphical user interface (GUI): user gives commands by selecting and clicking in icons displayed on the screen. See also interface.

Create, Copy , Move and delete Files and Folders
. To create a new file or folder right lick the mouse on the screen of the desktop. Click the new button. Click the folder or a file you want to course.
. To delete a file or folder select the file and folder the file and folder and press delete button. You will be asked for yes or no. Select yes and file or folder will be deleted.
Use of External memory like pen drive, CD< DVD etc.
A pen drive is a small self-powered drive that connects to a computer directly through a USB port. This device enable you to read, write, copy, delete, and move data from USB flash drives (Pen drive) to the hard disk.

CD/DVD is anther alternatives for carrying data, however it cannot store as much data as is stored is a pen drive. CD (Compact Disc) is a storage medium with a greater audio-visual data storage capacity than the of the CD of the same dimensions.
Copying filer from a pen drive to the computer
Step 1. Once you have opened the storage device , you can see all fifes and folders stored Within the device. Select the files or folder you Want to copy by clicking on them.
Step2. To select more than one file/folder, keep the CTRL key pressed while you select all the files you
Wish to copy in the computer.
Step3. Right- click on the files or folders you have  selected and select Copy. Alternatively, you may
Open ``Edit`` menu in the menu bar and select ``Copy.
Step 4. Open My Documents or the location to Which you want to transfer the files and folder from the device. For example, we will select E: Drive.
Step 5. Click  no the Edit  menu in the tool bar then select paste
Step 6. the selected files and folders are copied to the computer in a few moments.
